Thank you for taking the time to visit our Bruin web site. I’d like to take a few
minutes to explain who we are …
Founded in 2001 as the Howard County Bruins
Youth Football Team, our charter was to provide a place where players who couldn’t participate in other youth programs,
because of weight restrictions, had a place to play organized tackle football. As an unlimited weight program
we have no weigh-ins, but do have a recommend minimum weight of 125 pounds. Our players consist of 5th,
6th, 7th and 8th graders. Although high school players are not allowed
to play due to league rules, we do follow high school federation official rules. We have been able to maintain
enough registration to support varsity and junior varsity squads. The varsity team generally consists of
the older and more experienced players, while the junior varsity team consists of the younger or less experienced players
who may require more instruction.
We typically have a ten game schedule,
with post-season play. We practice and play our home games at Long Reach High School in Howard County,
Maryland. Our first day of official practice is August 1st, but we have four unofficial pre-season
practices for conditioning drills. Practices are from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday until
school starts. Once school starts, we practice three nights a week to practice skills and prepare for our
weekend game. Games are played on the weekends, with our home games being played on Sundays.
Our experienced staff takes pride in positively motivating and
mentoring these young players. As we prepare them for the next level of play, we want them to become not
only skilled football players, but to also respect the importance of being a team player. We emphasize
teaching character traits such as sportsmanship, responsibility and good citizenship within the community.
We had a great season in 2007. Our varsity program won its first Mid-Atlantic
Youth Football Association (MUYFA) Championship. After winning the championship, we were invited to the
Maryland State Youth Football Playoffs. The top two teams would play the championship game at the Baltimore
Ravens M&T Stadium. We made it to the championship game, but unfortunately lost 16 to 20.
We finished the season with an outstanding 13-2 record. Our JV team successfully finished their
season by winning their B Conference MUYFA Championship game 6 to 0.
As we look forward to 2008, we have many challenges. As a whole we want to grow and be
an elite program that impacts the youth of Howard County. Our varsity team needs to defend its first MUYFA
Championship. It will be a challenge that we are ready to take on. Due to a limited
number of returning varsity players, we are focusing on rebuilding and strengthening our program. We hope
the influx of new families will make that happen. So good luck to all - may we rise to the occasion and
have another successful season.
Sincerely,
Randy Hall
